1. Analyzer
Once you have successfully caused a bee to mutate, you will need to learn of its genetic makeup, also called "genome". To do this, use your Carpenter to craft an Analyzer. This device consumes honey or honeydew [Slot 1] for every drone, princess or queen [Slot 2] it analyzes. After being analyzed, you can place the bee into the lower slots (I-V) to obtain all sorts of information. Tip: This is a key tool in successful breeding! |
2. Genetic makeup
In the Analyzer, you can see your bees abilities, traits and preferred climate. You're looking at the bees "DNA Makeup". Active DNA determines the traits and species of your bee. [Dominant Genome] Inactive DNA has no effect, but can carry over to offspring. [Recessive/Sleeping Genome] Everytime a queen produces offspring, its active and inactive DNA will be randomly mixed. A newly bred bee is always a random mix of the princess and drone used to create it, even if they were of the same species! Tip: Analyze your bees to determine if they can cause a successful mutation or already have a sleeping mutation in their DNA. |
3. Purebreeding
There are many combinations of active and inactive DNA. Purebreeding defines the act of breeding select pairs of bees to remove conflicting traits until both the active and inactive DNA are 100% identical again. Once that is the case, the bee is "pure" and will no longer mutate randomly when mixed with itself. You can use purebreeding on a princess by continously matching it with identical drones, until the princess has adapted the drones DNA completely. Tip: Purebred bees are an excellent base when attempting to mutate a new bee species. Tip: Purebred drones will stack in any storage container. |
4. Climate tolerances
The Acclimatiser can increase your bees tolerance for temperature and humidity to absurd levels by consuming certain items. 1) Input: Bee to modify. 2) Input: Acclimatising Items. 3) Output: Acclimatised bee. Acclimatising Items: Humid ◄ Water --- Sand ► Dry Cold ◄ Snow/Ice --- Blaze/Lava ► Hot Tip: Try using water cans, because they stack. Tip: You may also be able to change your bees preferred flower type using this machine. |
5. Effects
Plenty of bees carry unique effects that they will exert onto their entire territory. These effects can be of harmful nature, such as the poison status effect, meteor rain and radioactive pulses. They can also be purely cosmetic, such as the firework effect. Some effects are incredibly powerful and can resurrect the dead, fast-forward spacetime, repair items or generate energy out of thin air. Tip: Some effects only affect items and tools placed upon a nearby flower pedestal. |
6. Protective measures
In order to protect yourself from any of the negative effects a bee may carry, you will need a full set of Apiarist Gear. Such a suit is made by first combining Silk Wisp into Woven Silk using the Carpenter. The Woven Silk is the crafted into pieces of the suit using a normal crafting table. Tip: The Apiarist Suit has incredibly low defense and mediocre durability. Do not wear it into any sort of combat! |
7. A mansion for your bees
In order to proceed, you will need to have bred the Industrious and Imperial species. Use their special produce to craft Alveary Blocks and assemble them in a 3x3 structure topped off with any type of wooden slabs as shown in the picture. This creates an Alveary. A single Alveary can easily be as efficient as fourty Apiarys, given its vast upgrade potential. Even without upgrades, it offers a massive inherhit boost to production speed and mutation chance! Its only downside is the vast amount of material needed to create it. Tip: This structure accepts automation using conduits and pipes. |
9. Humidity Upgrades
By adding a Hygroregulator in your Alveary structure and keeping it supplied with Lava or Water, you can adjust the internal Humidity level of your Alveary. This block also accepts liquids from fluid pipes or conduits! Tip: Adjusting the humidity will also have a small impact on the internal temperature. Tip: Multiple Hygroregulators effects can stack. |
10. Temperature and Energy Upgrades
By adding a Heater or Fan to your Alveary structure, you can adjust the internal temperature. These blocks both consume energy. In order to supply them, you also need to include an Alveary Transmission and feed energy into the Transmission Block. Tip: Multiple Hygroregulators effects can stack. Tip: The Alveary Transmission will also be needed in future Alveary Upgrades. |
11. Speciality Drops
Some bees can produce what is called a "speciality". This is usually a rare item unique to one bee species and will be displayed in the second row of a bees production interface or in the Produce tab of the Analyzer. A bee will only produce its speciality when it is in its favorite climate. It may still work in other climates due to its tolerances, but will not produce its speciality item unless all original climate conditions are met. These conditions can be viewed in the Analyzer, too. Tip: Almost all very rare items produced by bees are speciality drops. It is thus recommended you make use of Alveary Climate Adjustment. |
